Acetate vs TR90 vs Plastic Glasses: Which Fits a Wide Face?
Acetate vs TR90 and acetate vs ordinary injection-moulded plastic, compared on weight, adjustability, colour and repair — and what each means on a 155 mm+ face.

Walk into any optical store and you will meet two materials: shiny, warm-to-the-touch Italian acetate, and matte, feather-light TR90. Both are plastics. Both promise "premium." Only one is actually built for a wide face.
This is not a marketing piece — TR90 has real strengths and we will name them. But if your face is 155 mm+ and you want a frame that fits you, not the mould it came out of, the answer is not close.
The single deciding factor
Italian Mazzucchelli acetate can be reheated and reshaped at the bench — front curvature, temple splay, bridge angle. TR90 cannot. It is engineered to snap back to its factory shape. On a 155 mm+ face, that difference decides whether the frame sits level or forever tilts.
What each material actually is
Italian acetate — cellulose acetate is a plant-based plastic made from cotton and wood pulp. The Italian standard is Mazzucchelli 1849, which supplies the vast majority of premium eyewear ateliers in Cadore and Belluno. It arrives as a solid block. Every frame is milled, tumbled, polished and hand-finished — a 5–7 week process.
TR90 — a nylon-based thermoplastic (polyamide) developed by Swiss chemists in the 1980s, originally for ski boots and safety eyewear. It is injection-moulded: molten plastic is shot into a metal cavity, cooled in seconds, ejected. No hand-finishing. A frame that takes 5 weeks in acetate takes 90 seconds in TR90.
Acetate vs injection-moulded plastic
Before comparing acetate with TR90 specifically, it is worth separating the two categories properly, because "acetate glasses vs plastic" is the comparison most people are actually making. Acetate is a plastic — a cellulose-based one — so the meaningful distinction is not chemistry but process. Acetate frames are cut from solid sheet or block and finished by hand. Everything sold generically as "plastic" is injection-moulded: molten polymer forced into a metal cavity, cooled, ejected, done.
That process difference produces four practical consequences. Density and feel: a milled acetate front has consistent density throughout, which is why it feels warm and solid; moulded plastic cools from the outside in and carries internal stress lines, which is why it feels hollow and can whiten at flex points. Adjustability: acetate softens predictably at around 80 °C and holds a new shape; moulded polymers are engineered with shape memory and return to the mould geometry. Colour: acetate colour runs through the material, so a scratch polishes out; moulded frames are usually surface-coated or dyed, so a scratch is permanent. Repair: an optician can re-cut, re-polish and re-set acetate. Almost nothing on an injection-moulded frame is serviceable.
For a 155 mm+ face, the adjustability point outweighs everything else. A wide front is a long lever, and getting it to sit level almost always requires a one-to-three-millimetre correction at the temple or bridge after the first week of wear. Acetate accepts that correction. Injection-moulded plastic, TR90 included, does not — it will hold whatever geometry the mould gave it for the life of the frame.
None of this makes moulded plastic a bad material. It makes it a material chosen for cost and volume rather than for fit, which is a reasonable trade at $40 and a poor one at 158 mm.

Why adjustability is the whole game on a wide face
If your face is under 145 mm, the mainstream market has hundreds of moulds cut to your dimensions. A rigid TR90 frame will fit close enough that adjustability rarely matters.
Above 155 mm, the maths break. There is no dense cluster of moulds serving 158, 160, 162, 165 mm faces — the industry treats you as a rounding error. Even when you find a frame at your width, one temple is inevitably 2 mm too tight, or the bridge sits 1 mm too high, or the front tilts because your left cheekbone is 3 mm higher than your right (most cheekbones are).
An optician with a hot-air heater and Italian acetate fixes all of that in under ten minutes. The same optician looking at TR90 will politely tell you they cannot do anything — the plastic is memory-set. Try to bend it and it snaps straight back within seconds. Try harder and it cracks.
Our position, stated plainly
Woolet uses Mazzucchelli acetate for one reason above all others: a 158 mm frame on a 158 mm face still needs post-purchase fine-tuning. Acetate gives you (and your optician) that room. TR90 does not.
If you want the lightest possible frame for sport, TR90 is a real answer — just not from us.
Where TR90 genuinely wins
We are not going to pretend TR90 is inferior across the board. It is not.
- Sports and safety eyewear. Flex tolerance, low weight, no shatter risk. Acetate has no business on a mountain-bike descent.
- Kids' frames. Children lose, sit on, and drop frames. TR90 survives; acetate does not.
- Sub-$100 daily beaters. If a frame is going in and out of a backpack for a year, injection-moulded plastic is the honest, sustainable choice.
- Very hot climates. Acetate softens above 60 °C (a car dashboard in Dubai). TR90 does not care.
Where acetate wins by design
- Any face wider than 155 mm. Adjustability, repairability, and the fact that ateliers still cut it in this size range.
- Progressive lenses. A perfectly level front matters — one degree of tilt in the front plane pushes the reading corridor off-axis. Acetate can be corrected; TR90 cannot.
- Long-term ownership. A well-made acetate frame lasts 10–15 years with periodic hinge and nose-pad service. TR90 is closer to 2–4.
- Aesthetic depth. Layered colour, warm hand-feel, real polish. This is subjective — but it is why every luxury house from Persol to Jacques Marie Mage uses acetate, not TR90.
Quick decision guide
Face under 145 mm, mostly desk and daily wear: either material is fine. Pick on style and budget.
Face under 145 mm, active lifestyle: TR90 makes sense.
Face 145–154 mm: acetate is worth the premium for the adjustment margin alone. TR90 will fit but never settle.
Face 155 mm+: acetate is not really optional. This is the range where post-purchase adjustment is the difference between "wearable" and "unwearable" — and where the wide-fit market only exists in acetate anyway.
The one myth worth killing
"TR90 is unbreakable, acetate is fragile." This is repeated everywhere and it is not quite true. Acetate is rigid, which means it dents rather than flexes. But rigid also means repairable: the same rigidity that lets an optician reshape a temple lets them polish out a scratch or re-cut a hinge slot. TR90 is unbreakable in the way a garden hose is unbreakable — it survives everything except needing to change shape.
For a wide face, needing to change shape is not the exception. It is the entire point.
