Thick frame glasses make a statement — but only if the acetate is actually thick. Most 'bold' frames online sit at 3–5 mm of injected plastic and lose their edge after a few months of wear. Woolet is cut from 7 mm Italian Mazzucchelli acetate, Hand made in EU. Two shapes — round 007, soft-square 009 — at 158 mm wide, ready for prescription lenses, bespoke from 145–160 mm.

Woolet 009 — Soft Square
Soft-square Italian acetate frame, 158 mm wide with a 22 mm bridge. Bespoke from 145 to 160 mm.
Real thickness is a material question. Bold-looking frames on most sites are injection-moulded plastic shaped to look chunky. Cellulose acetate is cut from solid blocks, so the thickness in the spec sheet is the thickness on your face — front, rim, and temple. Woolet uses 7 mm Italian Mazzucchelli acetate on both 007 and 009. The bevelled edge keeps weight balanced even at that thickness.
Why Mazzucchelli matters at this thickness. Mazzucchelli 1849 is the same Italian acetate house that supplies Persol, Tom Ford and Oliver Peoples. The block colour goes all the way through — chips and scratches don't reveal a different base layer. At 7 mm, finishing also matters: every Woolet pair is tumble-polished for 48 hours and hand-rouged, so the surface is glass-smooth rather than the chalky finish thicker injected frames develop.
Thick, but actually wearable. Bold frames often fail on weight distribution: heavy front, narrow bridge, thin temples. Our 21–22 mm keyhole bridge spreads load across the nose instead of pinching one spot, and 5-barrel PVD Gunmetal hinges keep the temples from splaying under the extra mass. 158 mm front width means the temples sit naturally past the temples of the head, not bowed outward.
Prescription, blue-light, or polarised. Both shapes ship ready for any optician to fit single-vision, progressive, blue-light or polarised lenses. Lens area is 52 × 52 mm on the round 007 and 54 × 50 mm on the soft-square 009.
Pricing & sizing. $114 founding-member pre-order, $190 at full launch. Use the AI Fit Wizard (30 seconds with your phone) or the credit-card manual method if you prefer not to use the camera. For face widths outside 153–163 mm, bespoke covers 145 to 160 mm in either shape.
2–3 mm — standard wire or thin acetate. Looks delicate; disappears against most faces.
4–5 mm — what most direct-to-consumer brands call 'bold' or 'chunky'. Visible, but reads office-friendly.
6–7 mm — what Persol, Tom Ford and Moscot use for their signature frames. Reads intentional, with presence. Woolet sits here at 7 mm.
8 mm+ — vintage Italian thickness; specialist territory, often custom-only. Woolet bespoke can reach this on request.
Thickness is measured at the front rim, top to bottom. Side-on profile usually matches within ±0.5 mm. If a brand publishes a 'bold' frame without the rim measurement, it's almost always under 5 mm.
A 7 mm thick frame on a 138 mm front (mainstream sizing) overwhelms a small face — the proportions look top-heavy and the temples sit at an angle. The same 7 mm thickness on a 158 mm front reads balanced: the rim is in proportion to the front, and the bridge has the surface area to carry the extra weight.
If you're between 150–155 mm of face width, our 158 mm standard works. Above 163 mm or below 153 mm, bespoke keeps the 7 mm thickness but scales the front to match.
Both shapes ship at 158 mm wide with a 21 mm bridge, engineered for faces in the 153-163 mm range. Outside that, bespoke covers 145 to 160 mm with the same 21 mm bridge. Use our AI Fit Wizard to confirm the right fit for your face.

How thick are Woolet frames?
7 mm at the front rim, in Italian Mazzucchelli acetate. The thickness is consistent because the frame is cut from a solid block, not injection-moulded — so the spec matches what you see on the face.
What's the difference between thick frame glasses and bold glasses?
They're used interchangeably in marketing, but materially they differ. 'Bold' usually means injection-moulded plastic shaped to look thick (often 3–5 mm). 'Thick frame' in the proper sense means cut from solid acetate at 6 mm+ — what Persol, Tom Ford, Moscot and Woolet use.
Are thick frames heavy?
Heavier than thin wire, but not uncomfortable when the bridge and hinges are engineered for the mass. Our 21–22 mm keyhole bridge spreads load across the nose and the 5-barrel PVD Gunmetal hinges hold shape at 158 mm front width.
Can I get prescription lenses in a thick frame?
Yes. The thicker rim gives more clearance for high-index and progressive lenses than thin-wire frames. Take to any optician for single-vision, progressive, blue-light or polarised lenses.
Do thick frames suit my face?
Thick frames sit best when the front width matches the face width. A 7 mm rim on a 158 mm front works for face widths roughly 153–164 mm — bespoke covers 145–160 mm if you're outside that range.
Why is Italian acetate better than plastic for thick frames?
Italian acetate (Mazzucchelli is the reference house) holds its shape under heat, takes adjustments from an optician, and the colour runs through the block — so chips and scratches don't reveal a different layer. Injection-moulded plastic loosens with heat and the visible colour is usually a surface paint.
What shapes are available?
Two: the 007 round/panto and the 009 soft-square. Both at 7 mm thickness, 158 mm front, 21–22 mm bridge. Bespoke shape modifications are possible on request.
When do pre-orders ship?
Founding-member pre-orders ship in waves through 2026. Bespoke orders take an additional 6 to 8 weeks after the standard batch.
